Consumer ActivisM

Consumer activism is a form of political action by which activists seek to influence the way in which goods or services are produced marketed or sold. Consumer activists may boycott products or certain companies, buy certain products, or lobby businesses and governments. It could be defined as any social movement that uses society's drive for consumption to the detriment of business interests. Consumer activism includes both activism on behalf of consumers for consumer protection and activism by consumers themselves for other aims. Consumer activism has several aims:

  • Change the social structure of consumption

  • Protect the social welfare of stakeholders

  • Seek justice for the consumer and the environment

As Robert Reich wrote recently:

“It’s time to get serious about boycotting companies that are enabling the Trump regime, starting with Elon Musk’s X and Tesla and any companies that advertise on X or Fox News. Never underestimate the effectiveness of consumer boycotts. Corporations invest heavily in their brand names and the goodwill associated with them. Loud, boisterous, attention-getting boycotts can harm brand names and reduce the prices of corporations’ shares of stock.”
